Common questions about newborn photography answered!

Welcoming a new baby is such a huge milestone and completely changes your life forever, that newborn bubble only lasts a small time and before you know it they’re walking around and off to school. Trust me my daughter starts reception in September and I’m pretty sure she was only born yesterday! I treasure our newborn photos so much as they’re a way we can keep those special early day memories forever. Better still, now our daughters get to look back over those newborn photos time and time again. If you’re considering booking a newborn session, here are answers to some common questions to help guide you.

When Should I Book My Newborn Photography Session?

It’s best to book your session while you’re still pregnant. I reserve a flexible time slot around your due date to accommodate the unpredictability of birth. Once your baby arrives, simply contact me within 48 hours, and we’ll schedule a session that works best for your family.

Because I limit the number of sessions each month to provide personalized service, early booking ensures your spot. If you’ve recently discovered newborn photography after your baby’s arrival, don’t worry—I’ll do my best to fit you in, though priority is given to existing bookings.

A 20% deposit secures your booking, with the balance due a week before your session.

When Is the Best Time for Newborn Photos?

The ideal window for newborn photography is when your baby is between 5 and 14 days old. During this period, babies are typically more settled, retain their ‘womb-like’ positions, and are more comfortable being gently posed for those beautiful shots.

If your baby is older than two weeks, don’t worry—gorgeous portraits are still possible, though the session may have a different style.

What If My Baby Is Already 2 Months Old?

I photograph babies at any age! While your baby may be more alert and less inclined to pose like a newborn, we can still create stunning newborn photos that capture their growing personality. Sitter sessions around 6 months old can be a great way to document older babies and capture their budding personalities before they’re scooting about the place and are happy to sit in arms.

Where Are Sessions Held?

Sessions can take place at my comfortable Worcester home studio or in your own home. Sessions typically last 2 hours, allowing plenty of time for feeding, comforting, and capturing beautiful moments without any need to rush.

When Do We Get Our Newborn Photos?

Approximately 3-4 weeks after your session, you’ll be invited to view your images and select your favourites for download. Once you’ve selected your chosen 8 images, you’ll be able to automatically download them, or you can choose to upgrade and purchase the whole gallery if you’d prefer.

What Should I Bring to the Session?

Here are a few essentials to bring along:

  • Wet wipes, nappies, bottle of milk (if not breastfeeding), and a blanket
  • A dummy (if your baby uses one)
  • Snacks and water for yourself and any siblings
  • You’re welcome to include a special toy or sentimental item in the photos. My studio is fully stocked with blankets, headbands, hats, wraps, and rompers. You can pick whatever you like for your baby to wear, or use your own.
  • You’re also welcome to wear something from my client closet where I have many postpartum friendly gowns you can wear.

How Can I Prepare for the Session?

To help ensure a smooth session, try to keep your baby awake for 1-2 hours before the appointment. If they fall asleep during the car ride, don’t worry—I’ll gently transition them for the session.

Upon arrival, we’ll undress and swaddle your baby for comfort. A feeding before we begin is recommended. Once baby is calm, we’ll get you comfy with a cup of tea whilst I get to work getting baby settled and work through a small number of natural poses – things that baby likely does anyway! We then move into family portraits and some in-between photos of you interacting together as a family.

What If My Baby Cries?

Babies can sometimes wake or become a bit unsettled during a session—this is perfectly normal. We can take breaks for feeding, nappy changes, or simply for cuddles with Mum or Dad. Gentle swaddling and ensuring a warm environment often help soothe them back to sleep. If they’re not happy being separated from you and want to be in arms the whole time, I can easily adapt the session so we go for a more documentary approach and photograph baby within your arms, or feeding instead. The most important thing is that they, and you, feel relaxed and comfortable.

What Should We Wear for Family Portraits?

Neutral, light tones photograph beautifully and keep the focus on your baby. Avoid large logos, busy patterns, or neon colours. For timeless black-and-white portraits, a simple black t-shirt or shirt works well.

Capturing these fleeting newborn moments is an honour and a joy. I truly treasure every moment of my newborn sessions. If you have any questions or are ready to book your Worcester newborn session, I’d love to hear from you!
