Hey, I’m Grace! A Worcestershire newborn photographer based in Worcestershire, bordering Hereford and the Cotswolds which I also visit often for at home sessions. I have been capturing family and newborn sessions for four years, pretty much since my first daughter was born. It started with taking photos of my own babies, then photograph’s of mamas and their babies at toddler groups – then from there I’ve been photographing newborns primarily in the comfort of their own home.
How I work when capturing newborn photos
I offer beautiful newborn photo sessions at home because for a lot of families, it takes a huge pressure off. They’re in their own environment, they don’t have to travel and I bring everything I need for their newborn session to them. Usually I keep things really simple and bring a low basket, plenty of blankets and swaddles and a mix of neutral clothing for baby for parents to pick from. I also have a selection of maternity and postpartum friendly dresses for mums so you don’t have to go out and buy anything if you don’t want to.
When it comes to how I approach a newborn session, I keep things very natural and relaxed. No props, no risky poses, no huge set up or flash photography. Rather I usually find a single spot in your home beside a window and conduct the whole session from there. I place my low basket on the ground so there’s no risk to baby and work through some minimal poses which mimic what your baby does naturally, then we move into family portraits at the end. I regularly chat to my families ahead of their session to when discussing locations in the home, outfits and colours.
Why book a newborn session
The first couple of weeks (the newborn phase) of your baby’s life are so special but also pass very quickly. I find usually by week three they’re already uncurling and are much more awake and responsive to the world around them. This leaves a very small window for those curled up sleepy photos a lot of families are looking for. This is why I take on a limited number of bookings per month in advance of baby arriving so we can work around when your baby arrives and book in their session within their first two weeks, if possible.
You baby changes most quickly in their first year of life, and all we have left to remember those first months are their tiny clothes, and photos. Often it’s the parents taking the photos, but as our children grow, it’s the photos of us and them that they treasure the most. That’s what makes newborn photography so incredibly special, it bottles up a fleeting moment in time so that we can revisit it forever and remember all those little features.
When to book your newborn photos
I suggest booking in your session when you’re around 20 weeks, and we’ll pop in a provisional date, then once baby is here, just drop me a text and we’ll confirm a date that works for you. If things are all happening a little more last minute and you haven’t booked a newborn session, just drop me a line as soon as you can and I’ll let you know what I can do.
I can’t wait to document such special moments for you. Please do get in touch via my newborn photography page if you’d like to hear more.
